Evening Classes

The Catholic University of America regularly offers a range of Irish language evening classes for the wider DC community. The next course will commence the week beginning September 04, 2017.  These classes will be held once a week, between 7:00 - 8:30 p.m., for seven weeks. We welcome everyone! From complete beginners, to those who know a few words or have previously learned Irish.

Beginners’ classes are aimed at those who have no knowledge of the Irish language.  The emphasis is on developing speaking and listening skills.  By the end of the course participants will be able to engage in everyday interactions; greetings, introducing and talking about themselves, their work and past times.

Advanced classes are available for those who have studied Irish before, and would like to further develop or brush up on their language skills. Participants will have the opportunity to extend their vocabulary and discuss a range of topics. They will also have the opportunity to learn more about grammar, in context, and to read and write the language.

Teaching Approach

The communicative approach is used meaning that a strong emphasis is placed on group and pair work, giving learners the opportunity to play an active part in the class and practice speaking the language.  Most of all, we aim to enjoy ourselves and have fun while learning this beautiful language!

If you would like to talk to us to find out more about our Irish classes, we would love to hear from you!

Congratulations to CUA’s Celtic Cardinals
who placed second in the Intercollegiate
Irish Dance Festival at Villanova University!!

My name is Mariah Kelly.

I am a senior Politics major with an Interdisciplinary Minor in Irish Studies. Before coming to Catholic, I was always interested in Ireland's history and politics, and that was only fostered as a member of the CUA community. Having taken Spanish for years, I was ready to start a new language and quickly pursued CUA’s course in Spoken Irish. Having a chance to learn such an interesting and underrated language, I was instantly hooked and wanted to learn more. After completing a semester of Irish language and having taken Irish history courses, I journeyed to Dublin where I would spend the spring semester of my Junior year studying and interning. I was able to merge my passion for politics and Irish affairs, having one of the most rewarding experiences of my life. Working for Deputy Joe McHugh in the Irish Parliament was an honor, and I would not have been able to do that without the learning environment that Catholic created for me. Ireland has such a vastly interesting culture, and deserves a growing program, like the one emerging at CUA.
